Chud1: I'm not against all tariffs, but trumps tariffs are so high and poorly thought out they are thankfully destroying the American empire.
Most economists in their analysis of Tarrifs don't take into account that the tax revenue from a tariffs can offset some income and corporate taxes. It's taxing foreign production instead of domestic production at the cost of inhibiting comparative advantage and facing retaliatory tariffs.
Tariffs need to be strategic: focused on specific industries and natural resources. The issue with Trump's tariffs is they're by country and blanketed across industry. Trump is putting huge tarrifs on input goods we need to import because we don't have them. Any company reliant upon them is fucked. A smaller tariff on a manufacturing sector in a specific country can work. A 104% tariff on Lithium, which we don't fucking have is going to skull fuck our EV industry while China takes the lead. America not only has to import lithium from Africa and South America, China refines almost all the lithium in the world. America is going to build its own lithium refining industry which will take years for us to match China in. EV's are still new and most cars are gas. The name of the game right now is being the first to capture the most market share. Right now EV's are where social media was in 2006. Tesla is MySpace and BYD is facebook, except BYD's inputs are much cheaper and their technology is years ahead.
