Chud13: Varg is actually mostly right here except what bonded Tolkien to Christianity was a deathbed promise to his mother never to abandon it. He was absolutely obsessed with Germanic pagan ideas and it infused all of his writing, the Christian stuff is buried in the start of the Silmarillion because first god = supreme god or whatever, then the rest of the story can be pseudo-pagan (but with a marked absence of any actual religious practice for its characters) without guilt.
So basically, it's not that Tolkien was secretly a pagan and lied, it's that he was subconsciously a pagan and couldn't accept it. (Much like how Carl Jung's near death experience outs him as a secret Hindu, but he too was bound by a deathbed promise.)
Also lol @ depicting Tolkien as the Chad, I love the man but he could barely maintain eye contact or speak in public without stuttering.
